Films I’m falling over myself to see

I’m on a cinema diet. It’s budget-imposed and is particularly difficult as it has come at a time when there’s a ridiculous number of films I’d love to see.

asingleman1A Single Man - partly because it gives me hope that one day, when I’m wealthy and successful for something else entirely, I’ll be able to turn around and say, “Yeah, now I’m going to make a film” and for it not to be a horrible, horrible failure. Partly because it’ll be so stylish it’ll make me feel as though I’m stylish just for going to see it. Partly because I want to see Colin Firth do something that’s worth seeing. But mainly because I love Julianne Moore, who I’ve loved since Benny and Joon. Who am I kidding, I love everyone in Benny and Joon.

Crazy Heart - It stars Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal. What’s not to love? Also, I’m a sucker for a good washed-up-musician-based story.

Exit Through the Gift Shop - I’m a bit over Banksy but I’m intrigued by his foray into film making. I have no real clue what the film is about, whether it’ll make sense or if it’d be worth my hard earned cash to see it at the cinema. But if nothing else, I have a feeling it would make me laugh.

precious-movie-poster-cinema-blend-thumb-400x592-149161Precious -  I know it will make me weep like a child and I think that’s why I want to see it. I’d also like to see what Mariah Carey’s got to offer - don’t you just love it when pop star divas agree to ugly-down for a role? “Look how serious I am, I’m pretending to be unattractive for god’s sake!”

Shutter Island - The trailer for Shutter Island did the rounds a good few months ago, back when it was slated for release before Christmas ‘09. When I saw the trailer on the big screen, it looked like such a dark and gripping period film that I’ve been waiting impatiently for its release ever since. Finally - FINALLY - it’s out on March 12th. I also think Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the best actors of his generation. If you want to dispute that, I’ll point you in the direction of What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? thank you very much.

Un prophète - I haven’t heard much about Un prophète, but what I have heard has been accolade after accolade from people whose film-based opinions I have actual respect for.

The Princess and the Frog - just to see how Disney did.

Like tea, only better

Cosy knits for your tea - tea + knitting = The Best. Sure, you could pay $15 for this, but I reckon it’d be pretty easy to knit yourself.

cosytea

Hanger tea - because teaspoons are for losers and those stupid strings always end up in the cup

hangertea

Typewriter teapot - God, yes. I just love that this exists. Of course, I couldn’t buy it until I had a room full of curios otherwise the other kitchen implements would bully it (I think I watched Sword In The Stone one too many times whilst growing up).typerwitertea

Pretty little milk jug - this doesn’t go with anything I own either, but I still want it devilish bad.

Pure unadulterated grade-A awesomeness

little-girl-link

Unborn children of mine take note: this is what your future holds.

I’d rather have the Lego version, to be honest.

sinkplate2

Waterfall sink - like an infinity pool in your kitchen. Yes please.

yarn

As good a motto as any.

ibook

Finally, a use for all those old boring books I buy from library sales because they look nice but actually they’re rubbish. Happy day.

at-at-walker

I just adore this AT-AT Walker inspired lamp, even though it’s completely ridiculous that the light lives in a drawer.

Machotaildrop: Surreal skateboarding

Watch this trailer for upcoming indie film Machotaildrop. You’ll find yourself none-the-wiser about the plot, other than that it’s some kind of Pinocchio and Alice In Wonderland inspired skateboard film. From what I can gather, this kid Walter really loves skateboarding, sends his tape off to revered skate-brand Machotaildrop and gets invited to join their crew. That’s where it all gets a bit surreal.

I’m pretty excited about it - I love skateboarding movies because it looks like so much fun but I know I’ll never skateboard myself. Living vicariously through the characters is one of the best things about films.

It’s also got that lo-fi aesthetic that I adore, like a Wes Anderson/Spike Jonze mash-up and it’s full of the sweaty, beardy misfit hipsters that you’d just love to hang out with if only you were cool enough. Plus it features a shop called Cakeskate which sells ‘quality cakes and skateboards’. Awesome.

Who knows if it’ll even get released over here, but I’ll be keeping an eye out for it for sure.

Moss wallpaper

Moss. It’s not something the average person devotes a great deal of thought to, but there’s something really appealing about carefully controlled moss. I liked the idea of poetry moss on a tumble-down whitewashed wall in my garden-of-the-future and these moss-decorated interiors are pretty nice too:

It is a beautifully unusual idea, and a nice antidote to the staid wallpaper designs and plain walls that most of us endure. I’m not so sure about inviting actual moss into my house though, I can see that getting out of control quickly and turning the house into the garden and the street into my home when my landlord finds out.

The delicate designs are the work of Tokyo-based design studio nendo, whose adorable ethic is:

Giving people a small ” ! ” moment.
There are so many small ” ! ” moments hidden in our everyday.

I love those ! moments. Images from doornob via @katiescott1980

“Hello everybody.”

Sigh. Is there a more heinous sound than the beginning of a Spotify advert? It’s one of the many sounds throughout the day which remind me that actually yes, I do need another cup of tea even though my mug is still warm from the last one. I hate them enough to leave the room but not quite enough to fork out £9.99 a month to do away with them altogether.

But for once those six irritating syllables are a source of much joy as they signal the opening of a video demo of the Spotify iPhone app. Dream app much?

It’s all as brilliant as you would hope; with super-speed streaming and offline playlists for when you’re on the tube. Or doing something else sans internet if you don’t happen to live in London (weirdo). Delish:

The only thing that seems to be missing is the ability to use other functions whilst listening to music - so say I was listening to something on Spotify and I wanted to check my email at the same time; can I do that or will it stop the music when you exit the app? I suspect the latter.

It could all be moot anyway, since Spotify still has all the apple-flavoured hoops to jump through before this gets approved as an app, if it even gets approved at all. The totally hug-able Daniel Ek (whose non hug related achievements include being the CEO of Spotify) told paidContent:

We’ve a great relationship with Apple, think the iPhone is awesome and absolutely expect them to approve the app in the next few weeks. Apple has already approved several other music services such as Last.fm, Deezer and Pandora. We very much look forward to people being able to access their Spotify library wherever they might be and we’ve spent significant time and resources to ensure we’ve stuck to Apple’s developer guidelines point by point.

Textbook PR copywriting aside, this comment is one part sucking up to Apple, two parts making sure that they and everyone else in the world knows that Spotify are playing by the rules very carefully indeed. Apple will have to come up with some pretty good reasons to deny the app without looking like the baddie here.

When/if Apple deigns to approve it, the app will be free but only premium subscribers will be able to use it. Well played, Spotify. I guess I might bid your irritating ads so long farewell after all.

Eco graffito

If I had a garden, I’d want a shabby, peeling whitewashed wall at the far end at a right-angle to the unruly hedge concealing the door to the secret garden. And on that decrepit, possibly unstable wall, I’d like a pertinent (if slightly pretentious) quote about the beauty of nature and the ethereal qualities of garden-based life. Typographically appropriate and written in moss.

I’d also like a comprehensive herb garden.

Trees means tunes

Feast your eyes on these delicious wooden headphones. You could totally listen to the entire Michael Jackson back-catalogue on these /tenuousMJreference.

Created by supercinq for soon-to-launch music label The Perfect Unison, the wooden headband is made from Finnish birch and inspired by skateboard decks. There are more designs here. Don’t know how comfy they’d be, but still: WANT.
