Twitterless

June 18th, 2010Posted by katiesol

Way more than 140 characters about Twitter, why I’ve given it up and other self-centred observations about what is essentially an inconsequential micro-blogging service that exists in the imaginary world of the internet.

It’s not easy being short

March 30th, 2010Posted by katiesol

Last night I went to see a band*.
Well, that’s a bit generous – what I actually saw was a lot of people’s backs, a host of phones and cameras waving about in the air and a rip-roaring light show. In the absence of being able to see anything worth looking at I spent some time [...]

CoolBrands in pointless exercise debacle

September 28th, 2009Posted by katiesol

Somewhere out there, there is a list. A list that has been created by an ‘Expert Council’*, taking into account the opinions of over 2,400 members of the British public. A list so extensively researched that it makes your university dissertation look like the scrawl on the back of a napkin. This list will change the [...]

An inglorious about-turn

August 31st, 2009Posted by katiesol

Prepare yourself. What I’m about to say may well shock you to your very core: I’m not a Tarantino fan. I know, right? And me with my degree in film studies and everything. But it’s true. Sure, I admire his inventive experimentation and his stories are gripping, his scripts all right and his love of [...]

Exert myself physically? No thanks!

July 26th, 2009Posted by katiesol

When I first heard about ultramarathons (as run by favourite author Haruki Murakami) I thought that was it. I’d found the sporting event in which I’d least like to partake. After all, I’d find it difficult to summon up the motivation to run away from a burning building and that’s with mortal fear spurring me [...]

Do we really need music charts?

June 21st, 2009Posted by katiesol

The Official UK Charts Company (which, presumably, feels we do so need music charts) has finally deigned that the UK’s charts should take streamed music into account – but still not for another year at least, according to this report from the BBC.
Talk about playing catch-up. Services like Spotify and We7 may have taken off [...]

How you know that you’re too in love with your iPhone

June 18th, 2009Posted by katiesol

My love for my phone is well documented, but today I reached a whole new level of ridiculous. On my way to work, I was walking down Old Brompton Road when suddenly, out of nowhere, came a schoolboy barrelling towards me. He was all overlarge blazer and enormous backpack, head down and in a serious [...]

Five things I’d really like to do right now

June 8th, 2009Posted by katiesol

So, somebody once said that lists are a lazy blogger’s friend. Happy days, I’m the laziest blogger around.
1. Skate – I had to lump these together because it turns out wearing funny boots and gliding unsteadily along is not exclusively appealing be it on wheels or blades. I want to go ice skating so badly, [...]

My faith in the kids is restored

May 24th, 2009Posted by katiesol

I’m so impressed by the kids at Davenant Foundation School in Loughton, Essex, who went on strike after the school installed CCTV cameras in two classrooms.
Although apparently installed to record footage of best practice teaching, I for one wouldn’t do my best learning under the beady, suspicious eye of these bug-like cameras.
As a society, we’re [...]
